«The Zimmerberg Base Tunnel 2 was included in the expansion step 2035 (STEP ES 2035) as the second stage of the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel to increase capacity between Zurich and Zug, reduce travel time and improve the reliability of the connection.»
The Zimmerberg Base Tunnel 2 is a targeted expansion of one of Switzerland’s busiest railway lines. The new tunnel tubes create additional capacity for long-distance and regional traffic and improve timetable stability on the Zurich-Zug-Lucerne axis. The underground connection to the existing Zimmerberg Base Tunnel 1 ensures a more efficient and reliable connection.
The engineering joint venture’s mandate covers SIA phases 32-53. These include detailed and final design, tendering for the civil works, site supervision as well as BIM coordination. Once completed, the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel, together with the ZBT1, will be the fourth longest railway tunnel in Switzerland (total length of approx. 20 km). Particular attention is paid to the design of complex structures such as caverns, cross passages and an access shaft for the connection to the existing tunnel.
We are particularly pleased that some of the structures are planned in the Litti portal area, right in front of our office in Rotkreuz. This means we are nearby the construction site and can closely follow the project.
«The Zimmerberg Base Tunnel 2 is an important milestone for the Zurich-Zug rail corridor and an improved connection of the Zurich junction to the Gotthard axis. We are pleased to make a contribution to shaping this future-oriented project.» Lavdas Nikos, Project Manager
