Refurbishment of the 1’900 m section including the Casermetta Tunnel

Safe passage through the Gondo Gorge

«The refurbishment of the Casermetta tunnel improves safety and reliability of the Simplon route – the refurbishment ensures the operation of the challenging Simplon Pass route for decades to come.»
The comprehensive renovation between Hohensteg and Alpjen marks the next chapter in the more than 200 years old history of the Simplon route, which was used by Napoleon himself to cross the Alps. Today, the focus is on ensuring safety and longevity of this important transport axis.

Refurbishment on challenging terrain

South of the Simplon Pass and around 2.5 kilometers north of Gondo, the N09 national road runs through the Gondo Gorge. This section is just under two kilometers long and 97 percent consists of tunnels, galleries, and two bridges. The area lies over 1’000 meters above sea level and is characterized by steep rock faces – typical of the Simplon region.

Greater safety and durability

The work includes additional safety niches and a separate drainage system. At the same time, the clearance profiles will be brought up to current standards and the superstructure and substructure will be renewed. Existing concrete structures will be repaired and resurfaced to extend their service life.

The electromechanical equipment will be completely renewed and extended. These include signaling, passage and emergency lighting, SOS alarm boxes, a new fire alarm system, the entire electrical distribution system, communication lines (fiber optic cables), new surveillance cameras, and the complete renewal of the technical rooms.

Construction under special conditions

The work will be carried out exclusively during the summer months with traffic restricted to a single lane controlled by traffic lights. In winter (December to March), work on the road will be suspended and the route will be open to traffic without restrictions.

Our contribution to the project

On behalf of the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), we are responsible for the local site supervision – both for the repair works from 2022 to 2025 and for the electromechanical equipment from 2026 onwards. We are in charge of coordinating, monitoring, and ensuring the quality of the work on site – with the aim of implementing the planned measures efficiently, safely, and in accordance with standards.
