Tunneling through the lower Himalayas

Lombardi is the detailed design and project management consultant of the first tunnel of the prestigious flagship project in India, 125km Rishikesh-Karanprayag rail link through the Himalayas. The line is a single-track single tube railway tunnel with an escape tunnel running along the main tunnel. The excavation areas of these tunnels range from 25m2 to 200m2.
Lombardi-Italferr JV has provided services for the first tunnel with two portals, and open rail section on embankment with the project set in lower himalayas crossing boundary thrusts and synclines, zones with severe seismic intensity, overburdens up to 700m, passing through soil-like formations for >1000m, high water ingress, paleo & active landslides.
The aspects related to the tunnel Alignment, Electrical, Mechanical, Safety, Ventilation, Signalling and Telecommunication, Overhead Electrification etc., for the 10km railway tunnel were also designed.
