Mumbai Coastal Road Project, Maharashtra, India
A subsea suburban tunnel

«Transformational project to build a new coastal road to improve public and private transport links and reduce congestion and pollution.»
This Tunnel Boring Machine, ‘Mawala’ is the largest ever in the country, of 12.19m diameter, the design of which was assisted by Lombardi.
Lombardi is the contractor’s detailed design consultant involved in the detailed design of civil and tunnelling works such as segmental lining for twin bored tunnel with finished diameter of 11m; alignment design; architectural and structural design of underground technical buildings at both the portals. The electro-mechanical and safety design for the entire project which includes development of safety and evacuation concept, ventilation design with Saccardo system, electrical and power distribution system, ELV systems, HVAC – plumbing and firefighting system, SCADA systems for operation & maintenance of tunnels, computational fluid dynamics for ramp section was part of the consultancy services provided.
Lombardi also provided continuous technical assistance to the contractor during the entire construction period for civil works, TBM operations, tunnel ventilation and finalization of electrical and mechanical equipment.
The planning and design of ancillary components for 180 degrees rotation and translation of TBM for its relaunching for the second Tunnel drive within the constrained spaces of the tunnel shaft near Girgoan Chowpatty was one of the highlights of the accomplished challenges by Lombardi in the project.
