Swiss change in energy policy: Hydropower renewal

«Renewal of hydropower plants, the driving force for the Swiss energy transition.»
With a share of around 60%, hydropower is the backbone of Switzerland’s electricity supply, with Engadine Powerplants making a significant contribution. Engadiner Kraftwerke AG has commissioned Lombardi with the renewal of the Punt dal Gall and Ova Spin hydropower plants. These projects are ecologically innovative and crucial for the energy transition in Switzerland. We will revitalize the plants and ensure the long-term future of sustainable energy production.

The renewal project for the Punt dal Gall and Ova Spin hydropower plants marks a positive step towards the energy transition in Switzerland. With hydropower providing the basis for around 60 % of Switzerland’s power generation, these plants are crucial for a sustainable energy supply.

The Punt dal Gall dam, on the border between Italy and Switzerland, is not only known for its picturesque setting in the duty-free village of Livigno, but also for its impressive annual power generation of 1,200 gigawatt hours.

The Ova Spin plant, located in the heart of the Swiss National Park, bears a unique ecological responsibility. As part of this project, comprehensive refurbishment works are being carried out, including the replacement or renewal of all shut-off devices, and the renewal of the corrosion protection on all hydraulic steel structures. The old corrosion protection will be professionally removed and replaced with new protection, ensuring reliable continuous operation of the facilities for the next 40 years.

The project also includes the rehabilitation of all ecological discharge power plants in both headworks at Pund la Gall and Ova Spin. During the works, the ecological flow will be released into the River Spöl, allowing it to be used again as a sustainable source of energy at the dam. The scope of work also includes the renewal of all flow rate control centers in both storage facilities, Punt dal Gall and Ova Spin.

Another impressive aspect of this project is the rehabilitation of the more than 7-kilometer-long pressure tunnel connecting the two reservoirs, Livigno and Ova Spin.

Overall, the rehabilitation project for the Pund dal Gall and Ova Spin hydropower plants is not only an important step towards a sustainable energy future for Switzerland, but also an example of Engadiner Kraftwerke AG’s responsibility and commitment to environmental protection and energy efficiency. This demonstrates how hydropower, as one of the oldest and most reliable energy sources in the modern world, can continue to play a key role in overcoming current and future energy challenges.
