Brenner Base Tunnel – Successful Breakthrough in the West Main Tunnel

Another Milestone Achieved: Ceremonial Event in the Sill Gorge

On May 20, 2025, the breakthrough of the west main tunnel took place – another milestone in the project's progress. The first breakthrough on the Austrian side had already occurred in September 2024 in the parallel-running east main tunnel.

With the breakthrough of the western tube, the excavation of the northern main tunnel in H41construction lot "Sill Gorge-Pfons" has been completed. The two construction lots H41 "Sill Gorge–Pfons" and H21 "Sill Gorge" are now fully connected.

The northern main tunnel was excavated using the drill-and-blast method toward Innsbruck. Approximately 3.4 km were driven in the western tube and around 2.3 km in the eastern tube, which had already been broken through.

At 11:00 a.m., a speech officially opened the event. This was followed by the ceremonial breakthrough of the main tunnel. Afterwards, celebratory festivities took place at the Ahrental workshop.

The video shows the scene in the Sill Gorge (west main tunnel), facing toward Brenner. It captures the breakthrough being carried out with a roadheader machine. A few minutes later, miners and representatives of the ARGE H41 were the first to pass through the opening.
