Brenner Base Tunnel – Breakthrough of the TBM Ida

The tunnel boring machine Ida has reached the end of its journey

On August 22, 2025, the entire team of the construction site celebrated the breakthrough of TBM Ida in the West Main Tunnel between construction lots H41 “Sillschlucht-Pfons” and H53 “Wolf.”

In the coming weeks, the breakthrough of the sister TBM Lilia in the parallel East Main Tunnel is also expected.

TBM drives in the main tunnel tubes:

  • Main Tunnel West: km 8.23 to km 16.57 (length: 8340 m)
  • Main Tunnel East: km 8.48 to km 16.58 (length: 8100 m)

Technical data:

  • Boring diameter: 10,37 meters
  • Segmental lining inner diameter: 9,04 meters
  • Total length of TBM (incl. back-up train): approx. 160 meters
